 When do I need to file a traffic accident report?

 Every person operating a motor vehicle which is involved in an accident in which any
 person is killed, injured or in which there is damage in excess of one thousand dollars
 to any one vehicle or other property shall, within five days after such accident, report
 in writing to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles on a form and a copy shall
 be sent to the police having jurisdiction on the road where the accident occurred.

  How can I get a copy of a police report?

 Police reports may be obtained in the same manner as accident reports.  The fee is $1.00 per page.  Victims of Domestic Violence are entitled to that report at no cost. If the case is still under investigation, the report will be released at the discretion of the Chief of Police

 911 should be used to save a life, stop a crime, or report a fire. Any other emergencies should be called in on 659-7979, or 659-2211

If 911 is suppose to provide my name and address, why does the dispatcher ask me for it?

 It is the dispatchers responsibility to confirm that the Information shown on the 911 screen is correct.   If the name, address, or phone number is wrong in the database, it is up to the dispatcher to have the information corrected.

The policy of the Norwell Police Department is to confirm that every 911call received is investigated to confirm that it is not an actual emergency.

Should I call the police to find out if school is canceled due to weather conditions?

No, if school is canceled due to weather conditions, chances are the police department is already busy dealing with problems caused by the inclement weather and the dispatchers do not have time to answer these  types of phone Calls. School cancellations will be announced on local TV. And radio stations.

Should I call the police to report a power outage?

If the power loss is a result of a blown transformer, fallen wires, sparking wires, or an explosion, contact the police or fire dept so that they may secure the area.  If the power loss is the result of a storm, or the source can not be detected, contact your local power company. I am interested in becoming a police officer in Norwell. Are you hiring?

The Norwell Police Department hires Full Time Police Officers from an eligibility list established by Human Resources Division. A statewide open competitive examination is offered every two years (last examination date was 08 May 1999). Results of this examination determine hiring eligibility. In order to take this test, you need to be at least 19 years of age. ATTENTION OUT OF STATE CANDIDATES: The Norwell Police Department is subject to Massachusetts Civil Service laws whereby residents of the community who take and pass the Entry-Level Police Examination will appear first on any Eligibility List. The results of this test are released to Police Departments who request this list.
